Frank Lampard is this week's top England star after his goals at Bolton sealed the title for Chelsea.
Frank Lampard’s double against Bolton on Saturday won Chelsea their first league championship for 50 years so it’s little surprise he has also been chosen as the Lion of the Weekend.Lampard, who missed out on the PFA Player of the Year title to John Terry, is only one nomination away from Wayne Rooney in the chase for Lion of the Season.
His goals at The Reebok Stadium took his season’s tally to 18 and sparked massive celebrations in west London.
One of TheFA.com’s panel of judges Mick Mills, who was a league runner-up in 1980/81 said: "It is hard to believe Frank hadn’t won any medals before this season. Now he’s got the Carling Cup and Premiership title and it is thoroughly deserved.
"Chelsea weren’t at their best at Bolton and once again it was Frank who made the difference. How many times have we seen that this season?
"At Ipswich, John Wark once scored more than 30 goals in a season from midfield. Frank is the best in the modern game at running from deep and taking his chances."
Chelsea needed a win on Saturday to confirm the title was theirs. But that looked unlikely at half-time when Bolton had the better of a goalless opening 45 minutes.
Then, Lampard took over. First he held off a rugged challenge from Vincent Candela and shoot low past Jussi Jaaskelainen to put Chelsea ahead. Then he sealed the triumph with a fantastic run from his own half to latch onto a through ball from Claude Makalele.
