Two goals for United proved Wayne Rooney is in fine fettle ahead of the friendly in Spain.
Two goals for Manchester United proved Wayne Rooney is in fine fettle ahead of Wednesday's friendly in Spain.
It was probably Rooney's best Premiership game for Manchester United since his big-money move from Everton. The 19-year-old looked sensational in United's 3-1 win at Newcastle United on Sunday, pulling the strings and chipping in with two priceless goals.
Rooney's volley, when he let Darren Fletcher's chip-pass drop over his shoulder before firing home was pure gold. He also sealed victory in the closing stages by coolly steering the ball in after Ruud van Nistelrooy's effort had been cleared off the line.
In between, Rooney prompted much of the play from the left hand side of midfield, regularly breaking with great effect into central attacking positions.
"He gives United and England and added dimension. His awareness on the pitch is fantastic for someone so young," said this week's judge Russell Osman.
"You can see the effect he has on the national team. His first goal on Sunday shouldn't surprise anyone. It showed great awareness and technique."
