England's Under-21 manager - a former captain of his country and goalscoring hero at Italia '90 - picks his side in TheFA.com's search to find the ultimate England XI...
By his own admission, David Platt had doubts about whether he belonged in England's World Cup squad at Italia 90.
By the end of the tournament, he was one of our biggest stars thanks to a fantastic goal in extra-time against Belgium and a stirring performance against Germany in the semi-final.
Platt went on to captain England and became one of our most successful exports when he played in Serie A for Bari, Juventus and Sampdoria before returning to win the Double with Arsenal in 1998.
He is currently the manager of the under-21s, proud that several of his youngsters including Joe Cole and Jermaine Jenas have broken through into the full international set-up.
Like many of our jurors, he relies on personal experience for several members of his all-time England XI.
He was part of the same England set-up as Gary Steven, Stuart Pearce, Terry Butcher, Bryan Robson and Gary Lineker - and believes modern-day stars David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen are the equals to England players of any generation.
Perhaps the greatest surprise is the inclusion of Martin Peters, who scored the 'other' goal in the 1966 World Cup Final.
"He was years ahead of his time and when I was compared to Martin, I took it as a great compliment," said Platt.
The choice of Michael Owen and Gary Lineker together might raise eyebrows.
"I'm not sure how, in practical terms, these two would play together, given that both are true goalscorers who like to play on the shoulder of the last defender," admits Platt before adding. "I suppose being my ultimate XI I can get away with fielding them both!"
