Any team in the world would like to be able to call upon the considerable talent
Any team in the world would like to be able to call upon the considerable talents of Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and the rest of this golden generation of French stars. Could it be possible that one of the most promising French youngsters could yet pull on the white shirt of England?....Tuesday's Daily Express claims that 20 year-old Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere 'has hinted he may be ready to pledge his international future to England'.
The talented youngster that Arsene Wenger plucked at an early age from France is beginning to make him breakthrough to the Arsenal first team this season and it appears that international football is already on his mind.
Aliadiere has lived in England for four years and is therefore eligible to apply for British citizenship through residency next summer.
When asked about the possibility of doing such, the paper reports that Aliadiere intriguingly responded: "Why not? I don't see why I shouldn't."
*For reference, Article 18 of FIFA's Statutes state that: "Any player who is a naturalised citizen of a country in virtue of that country's laws shall be eligible to play for a national or representative team of that country."
The Statutes also say that: "If a player has been included in a national or representative team of a country for which he is eligible to play...., he shall not be permitted to take part in an international match for another country.
"Accordingly, any player who is qualified to play for more than one national association (i.e. who has dual nationality) will be deemed to have committed himself to one association only when he plays his first international match in an official competition (at any level) for that association."
