After a brilliant display, David Beckham has led his England side to the 2004 European Championships next summer...
The England captain missed a first-half penalty but led his team with a typical performance full of energy and skill.
Speaking after the game, Beckham said: "It was always going to be a tough game. We had no fans here and they had a full stadium behind them.
"We never do things easy but the 0-0 showed our character. We had our chances in the first half with the penalty and everything but that's in the past now. We're through."
England might have won the game had Beckham not lost his footing and slipped when taking a Gerrard-won penalty midway through the first period.
"The ground just gave way behind me," explained Beckham. "When we were training last night we were told to stay out of the penalty area and when I stepped up to take it the ground just gave way."
"We've stuck together all week through some tough times and we did so again tonight.
"We worked hard. Every man got behind the ball. It wasn't our best game but every one of the players was magnificent tonight. We're in it together.
"We'll enjoy tonight first and then think about rest. We're just happy to be through."
