England's match against Turkey tomorrow is not the firs
Poland 1-1 England: England's match against Turkey tommorow night is not the first time that the Three Lions' qualification for a major tournament has come down to one game.
Poland 1-1 England
Euro 92, Qualifying Group 7
Lech Stadium, Poznan
13 November 1991
Objective: England needed to draw in order to qualify for Euro 92.
This was a match where England needed a point to ensure theuir place amongst the eight qualifiers for the 1992 European Championship Finals in Sweden.
When the history of English football is written there can be no doubt that Gary Lineker will merit a chapter all of his own thanks to his uncanny ability to score crucial goals at vital times.
Another goal in Poznan, his 46th for the Three Lions, meant that England could look forward to a Swedish summer after European exit had been staring England in the face for most of a dramatic night in Poznan.
The Poles, playing some slick football, took lead just before half-time when Gary Mabbutt deflected Roman Szewczyk's long free-kick past the unsuspecting Chris Woods.
England had forty-five minutes to save themselves and, just fourteen minutes from time, they did it.
David Rocastle swung over a left-wing corner, Mabbutt flicked it on and that man Lineker hooked the ball high into the net.
Graham Taylor's England had done it the hard way, but they walked off the pitch on their way to Sweden, accompanied by the hearty singing of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, drifting across the night air.
