In the build-up to the game against Turkey, Sven has consistently re-iterated the importance of keeping everyone fit. So when David Beckham and Michael Owen arrived at Sopwell House on Tuesday afternoon less than 100%, a large amount of responsibility and faith fell into the hands of the England medical staff......
"Our aim with England is to produce a mirror image of what the treatment the players receive at club level," says Gary Lewin, a man well-placed to produce that symmetry as he is the physiotherapist for both Arsenal and England.
"We are in a hotel but we all come with a vast amount of equipment. We then set everything up to ensure that the doctor, physio and masseurs have everything that they require at their disposal. That's from electrotherapy equipment to plasters.
"Once we are set up, it's about treatment and communication. We treat the players round the clock and makes sure we stay in contact with the players' clubs every step of the way. For example, in the case of Michael Owen's injury, we've been in daily contact with Dr Waller and Dave Galley at Liverpool.
"That's vital if the player is to receive the best treatment possible."
Player: David Beckham
Injury: Dead leg
David reported for England duty with a dead leg following his most recent game for Real Madrid.
First he was assessed by team doctor Leif Sward to determine whether or not he could train on Tuesday.
He was not deemed to be fit enough to train on the first day so, instead, he did some cardio-vascular work in the gym. This was to keep his fitness levels up and keep him loose.
During the course of Tuesday he also had three sessions of treatment, with massage and stretching being the key.
He also wore compression bandages to pump out the dead blood caused by his injury.
A vast improvement meant that David was fit for training on Wednesday. He will continue to be treated at the hotel during the course of the day while Real Madrid will be kept informed of his progress at all times.
