The FA's Director of Marketing and Communications, Paul Barber, gave this update from the England Team Hotel this afternoon
"Feelings have been running high following The FA's decision to leave Rio Ferdinand out of this squad.
However, we have held a number of meetings with the senior players and the players have held several meetings themselves.
We respect and appreciate the views of the players. We have listened and will continue to listen.
The players will be meeting again early this evening.
In the meantime, Sven has advised me that the players have trained very hard and remain focused for Saturday.
From my own perspective, I can say that all of the discussions I have had have been extremely amicable and very professional.
We look forward to more discussions later in the day.
"We want this game to go ahead with this group of players.
"I think the players would like Rio back in the squad. That's something the FA is not prepared to do.
"We totally respect the view of the players ... There's a very good spirit in the England camp, that's something we're determined to maintain despite the fact we've had a difficult few days.
"The most important thing is that we get this game on on Saturday and we will do everything in our power to make sure the relationships stay intact so that we can get to a solution.
"Everybody is aware of just how important this issue is and how important this match is, the players as much as us...and everyone wants to find a resolution to it.
"We thank you for your patience."
