Thanks to a single strike from Alan Smith, only the Arsenal man's second England goal, the Three Lions won this Euro 92 qualifier 1-0...
England 1-0 Turkey
Euro 92, Group 7 Qualifier
16 October 1991
This was a critical European Championship qualifier for England and one where they might have hoped to improve their goal differential over the other three teams in the group.
That was not the case as a swirling wind around Wembley made it difficult for the home side to assert their clear superiority.
Bryan Robson was back at the heart of England's midfield but it was to be a comfortable passage against a Turkey side that had come to Wembley to try to contain their illustrious hosts.
The Turks broke at England from midfield and caused Chris Woods just a few problems. Chris Waddle, on what was to be his final England appearance, had difficulty making any impression on the match.
It was Stuart Pearce who set up the only goal of the game, surging down the left, passing Riza and crossing perfectly on to Alan Smith's forehead.
From no more than three yards out, the Arsenal striker could hardly miss, underlining his ability in the air and for once showing his old Leicester team-mate Gary Lineker the route to goal.
