The creative, ball-playing midfielder was made captain of Gala for the 1992-93 season, making him the youngest captain in the history of his hometown club. In his first season as skipper, the club won the Turkish championship for the first time since 1988 before they then went one better by successfully defending the title the following year.
By the time Tugay left Istanbul, he had won the Turkish league four times and the Turkish Cup twice (in 1993 and 1996). In all, Tugay spent twelve seasons at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in that time making 224 appearances and scoring 34 goals.

In all, Tugay has won over 70 caps, including experience of the European Championships (in both 1996 and 2000) and the World Cup - in last years Finals, Tugay played in all seven of Turkey's matches as Senol Gunes' side reached the semi-finals, losing 0-1 to eventual winners Brazil.
After two years at Glasgow Rangers - where he had become the first Turkish player to play in Scotland - Tugay was snapped up for £1.3 million by former Galatasaray manager Graeme Souness, now at the helm at Premiership side Blackburn Rovers.
Tugay's first season in the Premiership was a great success as he helped Rovers finish in tenth place in their first season back in the Premier League.
Last term they improved on that performance by finishing in sixth place, with Tugay again playing an instrumental role.
