The Derby County midfielder was first picked by England U17s Head Coach John Peacock for the Algarve Tournament in February 2012, after impressing with his club to such a degree that he was included in the Rams' first team squad.
He's hardly looked back since, quickly becoming an England regular and nailing down a spot in the Rams' midfield, despite his tender years.
By November 2012, he had caught the eye of then Under-21s boss Stuart Pearce and was included in the squad for their game with Northern Ireland in Blackpool when he made his debut from the bench in a 2-0 win.
After a long season for one so young, Hughes was rested by England during the summer of 2013 but was back in the Under-21s in August as Roy Hodgson took charge for the game with Scotland at Bramall Lane.
Hughes started that game and impressed in a 6-0 win as the new Euro qualifying campaign got underway the following month under new Head Coach Gareth Southgate with Hughes remaining a regular in the squad.
