Promoting positivity: in action

Guide All Ages

As a coach, your job is to help create safe, fun and inclusive football.
Promoting positivity is at the heart of this – and it doesn’t need to be difficult. From making players feel welcome to encouraging ownership, simple behaviours can have a big impact. To see this in action, check out the sessions below. 1. Welcoming players Making individuals feel part of a team is an essential coaching skill. In this session, Jamie Pitman, former FA skills coach, demonstrates how to include players from the moment they arrive.

2. Providing constructive feedback Telling players how to improve can be tricky. But giving useful feedback is a key component of any positive coaching environment. In this video, Peter Augustine, FA coach development officer, demonstrates how to deliver feedback that impacts the game and make players feel great.

3. Encouraging ownership and understanding When players understand what they need to do – and are given the choice of how to do it – they’re more likely to enjoy your sessions. In this video, Gordon Staniforth, former FA county coach developer, uses simple interventions to help players ‘own’ the game and maximise their learning.
