England v Portugal
Saturday 01 July 2006
World Cup,
Quarter-Final
Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen
4pm kick off (London Time)

As we continue our build-up to England's World Cup quarter-final with Portugal, let us take you back to the last time the two sides met.

It's Lisbon, June 24, and the Euro 2004 quarter-final between England and Portugal.

After losing to France in their opening game, a Wayne Rooney inspired England battled back to beat Switzerland and Croatia to finish runners-up in Group B.

The reward - a meeting with hosts Portugal. The prize on offer - a place in the semi finals.

In a pulsating game, England took the lead in the third minute when Michael Owen latched on to Costinha's poor back header and flicked the ball past Ricardo.

But English hearts sunk in the 24th minute when Rooney, the catalyst of England's success so far, was substituted with a broken foot.

The Three Lions held on until seven minutes to go when Portugal grabbed an equaliser when Postiga nodded in.

In another twist, Sol Campbell thought he had headed a last minute winner, only for the referee to disallow the effort for a foul on Ricardo.

After a goalless first period of extra-time, Rui Costa drilled the ball past David James to give Portugal the lead with just ten minutes remaining.

But England fought back and sent the game to penalties courtesy of Frank Lampard's smart turn and finish.

In the shoot-out, England got off to the worst possible start when David Beckham blazed over the bar. But The Three Lions were soon level when Rui Costa missed from 12 yards.

Michael Owen, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Owen Hargreaves all netted for England to take it to sudden death.

Ashley Cole held his nerve to put England 5-4 ahead before former Spurs forward Postiga levelled.

Cruelly, Darius Vassell, a substitute for the stricken Rooney, saw his shot saved by Ricardo, who then slotted home the winning penalty.

Can England gain revenge on Saturday?
