Hi everyone!

Well it's all over and I am so disappointed.

I watched the Portugal match at home after my morning training session at the gym with Oliver Harrison, my trainer.

I thought that the first half was pretty even, with both teams sussing each other out. There weren't many chances - one mistake could have been costly.

I don't think Wayne Rooney deserved to be sent off. I thought he had been sent off for pushing Cristiano Ronaldo, the tangle with Carvalho didn't seem to be much at all. Rooney just put his foot down to steady himself, I don't think he did it deliberately.

England tried very hard after the sending off, but it was always going to be difficult against 11 men in that heat.

I thought Steven Gerrard covered a lot of ground but Owen Hargreaves was our best player on the day. He seemed to be everywhere, getting tackles in and deserved to score his penalty.

The shoot-out could have gone either way. Its OK for the fans to say 'I'm confident we'll do it this time', but put them in that situation, needing to score a penalty in such an important game, then ask the same question.

It's easy to blame people afterwards, but those players had the bottle to get up and take one, and I admire them for that.

I was very disappointed at the end, both as a fan and as a fellow sportsman. As sportsmen we want to win all the time, whatever we are doing, whether its boxing, football or any other sport. We want to win for our country and our fans.

But you have to say the result was fair because Portugal scored more penalties than us. It's harsh, but fair. Some of their antics were not fair, but that's another matter.

I don't think we played to our full potential. We have so many excellent players and expected a lot more.

It goes back to the same old question - do English players play too much football?

Look at Steven Gerrard. No wonder he was struggling at the end, he played nearly every game for Liverpool last season, and Frank Lampard only missed a couple for Chelsea.

I don't think we had an outstanding performer at the tournament but a few players played well - Gerrard, Joe Cole, John Terry and Hargreaves.

You have to accept and admire David Beckham's decision to stand down as captain. It's a shame he won't be captain when he wins his 100th cap.

It can't be easy resigning after losing in a World Cup quarter final, but he has been a good captain and player after taking so much stick after his sending off against Argentina eight years ago. It showed how much it meant to him when he scored.

We have to be positive for the Euro 2008 qualifiers. The players will regroup under a new manager and I'm sure we'll qualify.

Thanks for reading my column. I only wish I had been doing one after Sunday, having watched England in the World Cup final, but sadly it wasn't to be.
