Stewart Downing says having Wayne Rooney back can only improve England's chances of World Cup success.

The Manchester United striker came on after 58 minutes today to make his comeback from a broken foot. And Middlesbrough winger Downing was impressed.

He said: "The fans want to see him play and so do we. I think he did well considering he has been out for so long and he changed the game a bit. It's a big boost to have him.

"We were winning without him and now he's back it's even better. There are some big games coming up and we need our big players with us.

"He's a big character as well, he lifts the mood in the squad. He's a funny lad and like I say we need everyone fit."

Downing helped England to victory against Trinidad, coming on as a sub for Joe Cole, and believes overall it was a good display from the Three Lions.

He said: "We kept going right to the end, in fact I think we got better as the game went on. It was a matter of being patient, that's what the manager said, and it worked.

"It was two great goals from Crouchy and Gerrard and we're pleased with the result."
