With goals from Louise Roberts and Hannah Smith, Wolves came away from the Ricoh Arena with a comfortable win. |
At the impressive Ricoh Arena, Midland rivals Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers played out an exciting FA Women's Cup tie with the visitors coming away with the spoils thanks to Louise Roberts and Hannah Smith.
Wolves took an early advantage with an excellent goal from Louise Roberts. Penny Andrea moved the ball forward to Hannah Smith, who squared it across the box to find Louise Roberts. Her shot deceived the keeper at her far post.
Wolves had a lot of the play in the first half, with chances for Vicky Gutteridge, Penny Andrea and Chloe Jones, while Louise Robert hit the post from 20 yards out.
Coventry’s Sinead Wade shot over the bar on 12 minutes, and the Sky Blues forced Wolves’ keeper Natalie Hall to make a fine diving save on 23 minutes as she pushed the ball round the post. They had another chance on 44 minutes, but Hall got her hands to the ball, sending Wolves in 1-0 up at half time.
Coventry came out fighting and had some good chances in the first 10 minutes, but Wolves’ defence held firm, with Hannah Williams and Leanne Rimmer taking care of business at the back.
On 54 minutes Wolves’ Sarah Lambeth shot just wide, and 4 minutes later a cross in by Vicky Gutteridge found Hannah Smith, whose shot skimmed past the post.
Wolves’ second goal came on 65 minutes, with a goal kick from Natalie Hall. The ball was flicked on by a Coventry player, giving Hannah Smith a chance to turn and run for a one-on-one with the keeper, slotting the ball home.
Wolves continued to pile on the pressure with several more chances, while Coventry were stopped by Wolves’ keeper Natalie Hall. Both sides fought it out right to the end, making an entertaining game for the large crowd.
Wolves Women Chairperson Jenny Wilkes said: “This was a great advert for women’s football, and I’d like to thank the directors of Coventry City Football Club for hosting today’s game and giving the players a chance to play in such a magnificent stadium. It would be great to see more professional clubs following Coventry’s lead and showing their support for the women’s game.”
