Newcastle United were eventually ousted on sudden-death penalties by Liverpool after an end-to-end encounter between two sides desperate to make it through to the semi-final.
Ruth Sutcliffe gave the Magpies the lead, with Gayle Formston levelling midway through the second half. Michaela Newton restored the hosts lead in the second half of extra time but with only two minutes remaining, Jade Thomas brought Liverpool level again.
Newcastle seemed to have won it on penalties when Liverpool missed their fifth, but the referee ordered a re-take. Nicky Davies saved two spot-kicks as Liverpool went on to clinch an 9-8 penalties victory.
Rob Atkin, NUWFC Head coach, said: "The players have been fantastic, Liverpool are a good team but we know we should have won the game, having been in front twice and in the penalty shoot out.
"We can only control what we do as individuals but some of the decisions today continued to go against us, but our players can be really proud of what they have achieved in this cup run." Charlton Athletic progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 5-0 away win at Bristol Academy, making light of a difficult pitch with a devastating display of attacking football.
Maria Bertelli and Jo Potter put the Addicks two up at the break, but Charlton's win did not come without a blow, as Eniola Aluko departed the action with a potential hamstring injury after netting the third goal.
Sarah Snare demonstrated further evidence of her growing maturity, coming off the bench to add a fourth. Eartha Pond, getting back to full match fitness wrapped the game up with a fifth. Leeds United were two goals to the good by the break at Birmingham City.
The evergreen Karen Walker put the Yorskhire side two goals ahead, with Sue Smith extending the lead to 3-0 midway through the second half.
Sally Lacey netted a consolation goal in the last minute for The Blues, who will now trun their attentions to preserving their National Division status.
