Bristol City gave Charlton Athletic an almighty scare before The FA Women's Cup holders marched into round five of the competition.

The Addicks - currently Premier League leaders - found it tough going against a dogged City side, who could easily have been ahead in a close first period.

With the scores locked at 1-1, and the game heading towards extra time, three goals for the visitors in as many minutes gave the final 4-1 scoreline a one-sided look.

Faye Cardin popped up unmarked at the back post on 22 minutes to steer home Jo Potter's cross for the opening goal. But City still fought back as King released Bevan, who in turn was denied by a fine save from Pauline Cope.

City, it seemed, just needed a slice of luck to get back into the game, and they got it three minutes after the restart. Cope missed Helen Bleazard's cross and the ball landed on Tinson's head before looping into the net.

However, from that moment on it was all one-way traffic with Heatherson twice denied by Laura Niblett, before Potter went close with a long range effort.

The pressure proved too much as a right wing corner was headed in by Casey Stoney ten minutes from time.

Substitute Gemma Ritchie fired a third from distance seconds later before Eniola Aluko completed the scoring with a cool finish.

Newcastle United made history when they sealed a place in the Fifth Round following a 3-1 home win against Northampton Town.

The opener came on 37 minutes when Michaela Newton hit a left foot strike to put the home side deservedly in front. The home side continued to push forward and on 43 minutes, captain Sarah Renton fed a superb ball through to Newton for her to send a right foot strike into the top of the net, for the home side to be two up at the break.

Northampton Town came back fighting in the second half, creating more chances and were rewarded when some sloppy defending from a corner allowed the ball to sneak into the United goal.

The North East side kept their composure and restored their two goal lead with a rocket of a free kick and despite
Northampton hitting the bar from a free-kick, United held on to progress to the Fifth Round.

Their opponents will be fellow Northern Division side Curzon Ashton who 'upset' National Division Sunderland.

Mel Reay opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 73rd minute when Jill Scott was brought down in the box, Reay despatching the penalty.

However, seven minutes into stoppage time Curzon grabbed a shock leveller through Alison Hindley, heading in an innocuous looking cross.

Ashton took the lead in extra time, when Hindley again netted. England U19 player Steph Houghton equalised but despite having further chances, the home side couldn't convert them.

The Wearsiders finally came unstuck as the visitors emerged victors 4-3 on penalties.
