Jayne Ludlow was in goalscoring form again for Arsenal against Liverpool.
Of last year’s FA Women's Premier League Cup finalists both Leeds and Arsenal had their Women’s Premier League Cup First Round ties postponed, but despite their absence, Sunday’s matches still produced an avalanche of goals.
The south coast was certainly the place to be for net bulging action over the weekend. Portsmouth were involved in a record breaking Premiership 11 goal thriller on Saturday. And although their female counterparts couldn’t quite match that tally in their meeting with Rotherham, they still progressed to the second round after a 6-3 extra time win.
While their First Round tie with Cardiff will be played on Sunday 7 October, Arsenal notched their second league victory in three days as Lianne Sanderson, fresh from making her World Cup debut as a substitute against America a week ago, took her tally to five goals already.
Jayne Ludlow and Karen Carney notched the other two goals in Arsenal's 4-1 victory over Liverpool. It was the Champions second away game of the season, having overcome Watford 6-2 on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, although Chelsea’s men might be struggling for goals at the moment, the same cannot be said for their ladies team, who cruised into the next round after hammering Crewe 8-1.
Blackburn were similarly emphatic winners as they put eight unanswered goals past Brighton, while Birmingham came out on top in the Midlands derby beating Aston Villa 4-1. Elsewhere, there were mixed fortunes for former finalists Tranmere Rovers and Doncaster Belles.
The side from the Wirral, runners-up in 2001, lost 4-2 at Colchester but the Belles, twice losing finalists in 1994 and 1996, were 2-0 victors over Crystal Palace.
Finally, Everton had enough firepower to overcome Barnet 6-0, while London duo West Ham and Watford all go into the hat for the next round.
