NATIONWIDE WOMEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE
Bristol Rovers meet Everton in the second round of the Nationwide Premier League Cup.
Rovers' tough Toffee tie
By Tony Leighton. Friday, 08 October 2004.
This time last season it would have got barely a mention, but Sunday’s clash between Everton and Bristol Rovers is undoubtedly Round Two’s match of the day in The FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League Cup.
How times change - 12 months ago Everton were lying in the middle of the National Division without threatening to make a challenge at the top, while Rovers were rock bottom with just two points from seven outings.
Now the Toffees are undefeated and second in the table only on goals-scored to League Cup holders Charlton Athletic, who are the only team this season to have beaten the third-placed Gas Girls.
So it should be quite a tussle on Merseyside as Everton, who were battered 7-0 by Leeds United in Round Two a year ago, entertain a Rovers side looking to eventually go one better than the semi-final place they achieved last term.
Fulham were the team who last year knocked out the Gas Girls before losing in the final to Charlton, who on Sunday should have no problems in disposing of the Northern Division’s bottom club Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals.
The Cottagers, winners of the trophy in both 2002 and 2003, face a far more difficult task as they travel to meet Leeds United a week after the in-form Yorkshire outfit ended Charlton’s unbeaten record.
That was a fourth successive victory for Leeds, who lost in last season’s League Cup quarter-final to Fulham but will be confident of gaining revenge as for the first time they host a match at South Leeds Stadium.
In Round Two’s third all-National Division meeting, Arsenal - League Cup winners a record seven times - will be hot favourites to beat a Bristol City side whose draw with Fulham last week brought the Robins their first point of the campaign.
Southern Division sides Millwall Lionesses and Cardiff City get the chance of giant-killing acts when they face top flight teams Birmingham City and Doncaster Rovers Belles respectively, as do Northern Division Sheffield Wednesday against Liverpool.
Northern Division
Blackburn Rovers head into their second successive top-of-the-table clash on Sunday, but after toppling previous leaders Sunderland last week it will be as top dogs themselves that Rovers visit second-placed Aston Villa.
Sunderland, who dropped to fourth place following their defeat by Blackburn, will be looking to make up lost ground when they entertain third in the table Oldham Curzon while fifth-placed Lincoln City take on Wolves.
Southern Division
As in the Northern Division, there’s a top-meets-second battle down south as leaders Chelsea visit a Crystal Palace side who are posing a real promotion threat in their first season as a Premier League club.
Two seasons ago Southampton Saints were in the top flight and last term just missed out on a rapid return, but now they are bottom of the Southern Division with no points and facing a difficult fixture at third in the table Langford on the weekend.
By contrast Southampton’s near-neighbours Portsmouth are sitting pretty, level on points with Langford and confidently looking forward to visiting third from bottom Enfield Town.
