Charlton Athletic take on Fulham once more...

There will be more than just a trophy at stake when holders Fulham meet treble chasing Charlton Athletic in Sunday’s FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League Cup final (kick-off 12 noon) at Barnet’s Underhill stadium.

The Cottagers are not only aiming to complete a hat-trick of League Cup successes but also want to prevent the Addicks from matching their own League, FA Cup and League Cup triple triumph last season.
Charlton, meanwhile, want to collect their first major trophy with a victory that would avenge last season’s FA Cup final defeat by Fulham and set them up for the treble while also ending another long unbeaten record of Fulham’s.
Already this season the table topping Addicks have put paid to both the Cottagers’ 78-match undefeated run in all domestic football - by knocking them out of the FA Cup – and their 53-match unbeaten Premier League run.
Now they are determined, in what promises to be an exciting final which is being screened live on Sky Sports, to wreck a Fulham sequence of 15 successive Premier League Cup tie victories.
Since they became an FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League team in 2001, in fact, the Cottagers have not lost a single League Cup tie – and they don’t intend to start on Sunday, insists their England left back Rachel Unitt.
The former Wolves and Everton player, looking ahead to Sunday’s big game, said: "Now that we’re out of the FA Cup and the League title’s no longer in our own hands, this is our biggest game of the season.
"We haven’t given up hope of winning the League, but we need Charlton to slip up to give us a chance. That’s not the case in the Premier League Cup though, and we are absolutely determined to win at least one trophy this season.
"We may have lost League and FA Cup matches to Charlton earlier in the season, but we also beat them at their place in the League so we can level things up and put the record straight by beating them again on Sunday.
"Keeping our hold on the Cup is the most important thing, but we also want to stop Charlton winning the treble. Only Arsenal and ourselves have done it before - and hopefully we can keep it that way for another season at least."
Twenty one year-old Unitt has played in all four of Fulham’s League and FA Cup final victories, but her record cannot yet compare with that of Charlton’s veteran England goalkeeper Pauline Cope.
In her long career the hugely experienced keeper has collected an abundance of winners medals with Millwall Lionesses, Arsenal and Croydon – but she has none so far from her near-four seasons as a Charlton player.
That situation, however, is about to change if Cope has anything to do with it. "I’ve not got long left in my career," said the 35-year-old keeper, "but I still want to win things and it would be great to help Charlton pick up their first trophy.
"From the position we’re in, at the top of the League and already into the FA Cup final, we have to be confident we can do the business on Sunday even though we know it’s going to be a tough match.
"Fulham are always difficult opponents, but we’ve beaten them the last twice we’ve played them and there won’t be any negative thoughts from us on Sunday – we’re a team that’s become full of self-belief.
"We’ve sometimes had to grind out results without playing the prettiest football, but results are what it’s all about and all the hard work we’ve put in as a group this season has put us in the great position we’re in right now.
"We’ve only got four games left this season and if we win them all we’ll have the treble. If we were to lose on Sunday we could possibly end up with nothing, but that thought just won’t enter our minds – we’re going to Barnet to win the Cup!"
The match will kick-off at 12 noon on Sunday 28 March 2004 at Underhill stadium, Barnet FC.
Tickets will be sold on the day of the game, priced at £2 for adults and £1 for concessions.
The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 1.
