Bristol Academy v Everton
The FA Tesco Women's Premier League
Sunday 3 February 2008
Oaklands Park, Bristol
Everton will head to FA Tesco Women’s Premier League leaders Bristol Academy on Sunday knowing that victory would not only earn them three valuable points but also do arch rivals Arsenal a favour.
If the Toffees do indeed collect a seventh successive league win then the Gunners will go to the top of the table if they can beat second in the table Blackburn Rovers to maintain their 100 per cent record.
Helping Arsenal is the furthest thing from the minds of the Everton players, who in four weeks time are set to meet the Gunners in the Premier League Cup Final at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road.
But the Toffees are determined to continue climbing the league table to hopefully challenge Arsenal for the title says midfielder Emily Westwood, whose club form has earned her a recall to the England squad after missing out on World Cup selection.
"We’ll probably have to win every match we’ve got left to get past Arsenal," admits Westwood. "But we are certainly capable of keeping our run going and hopefully we can beat them in the League Cup Final to give ourselves a major boost.
"We can’t think about that at the moment though, and we know we’ve got a tough match on Sunday. Bristol are a hard-working team who always give us a difficult time, but we’ve got a game-plan and if we stick to it we can take the three points."
Westwood is delighted to be back in the England fold and set for matches against Sweden and Norway in Cyprus later this month. "I was gutted to be left out of the World Cup squad," she says, "but I’ve been buzzing since I got my place back.
"Hopefully I’ll get some match time in the games in Cyprus and I can press my claim for a place in the Euro 2009 qualifiers we’ve got coming up soon. But I know I have to go on playing well for Everton to do that – and that’s definitely my aim."
While Arsenal, Blackburn and Bristol Academy will all be looking to finish Sunday on top of the table, Everton could climb two places to fifth depending on results of the games involving Leeds United and Chelsea.
Leeds visit Birmingham while Chelsea entertain Doncaster Rovers Belles with a new player, former USA star Lorrie Fair, set for a Blues debut that will make her the first American international to play in the Premier League.
In the day’s final National Division encounter relegation threatened Cardiff City, second from bottom of the table, will be hoping to close the gap on third-bottom Liverpool when they visit the Reds.
