Arsenal face the toughest test of their FA Tesco Women’s Premier League season to date as they head to Merseyside for Sunday’s meeting with Everton.

The Gunners had their 60-match unbeaten run in all competitions ended by Olympique Lyonnais in last week’s second leg of the Uefa Women’s Cup quarter-final.

And although they stretched their amazing run of League wins to 40 in succession at Charlton on Thursday, they may just be at their most vulnerable for a couple of years.

The last team to prevent the Gunners from winning a League game was Everton, who held them to a 3-3 draw in October 2005.

And Arsenal’s England striker Lianne Sanderson admits: “Our games against Everton are always hard ones and we expect no different on Sunday.

“They’ll think it might be a good time to play us after our defeat against Lyon, and that was certainly hard to take.

“We let ourselves down a bit and it’s taken us a while to get over going out of Europe, especially after winning the Cup last season.

“But we’ve re-grouped now, and after our win at Charlton on Thursday we’ll be up for Sunday’s game just as much as Everton will be.”

The Toffees have finished runners-up to Arsenal in each of the last two Premier League campaigns but would love to make it third time lucky this term.

While the Gunners have won the League in six of the last seven seasons, Everton’s name has not been on the League winners’ trophy since 1998.

A decade on the team managed by Mo Marley, who was a central defender in the triumphant 1998 side, have designs on lifting the crown again.

But Sanderson said: “The title’s ours and we aim to keep it. We may be out of Europe but we still want to win all the domestic trophies, just as we did last season.

“Everton will make a challenge, there’s no doubt about that, and we’ll have to be at our best to keep our winning League run going on Sunday.

“But we know the job in hand, we’re over our European disappointment and we’re totally focused on going out to win every game from now until the end of the season.”
