One young Newcastle United Women's player is hoping to following in her older brother’s footsteps and wear the United shirt as a first team player.
Thirteen year old Sophie Chopra, little sister of United striker Michael Chopra, was inspired by her brother to take up the sport, and has been member of Newcastle’s junior section for three years.
Adopting the same forward position as her brother, Sophie is very much a valued member of her team. The fact that the current first team is filled with young players gives Sophie the confidence that she can make that breakthrough sooner, rather than later.
The Gosforth Middle School pupil has the full support of Toon striker Michael in her ambitions and he is always on hand to give advice ahead of games. “It is important for Sophie to be confident in her play and always try her best” said the 23 year old United star.
Despite being only 13, Sophie has experienced the atmosphere of a Premiership game at St James’ when she teamed up with her hero Alan Shearer for the Newcastle Gateshead cup.
It would be a massive boost for Sophie to progress into the Newcastle Women’s first team squad and with the excellent development facilities available at Newcastle, she is sure to take advantage of these and become a top player.
Coach Lisa Bell said: “Sophie is a very valuable member of the Newcastle Junior Section and is willing to listen to become a better player.
"She knows if she is to reach the high standards of the Women's Premier League she has to continue to work hard to fulfil her potential, but she is a very popular member of the squad and we hope to see her emulate her brother's FA Cup goalscoring feats in the coming seasons.
