The result in the Black Country, combined with a hard-won point for Sunderland away at Stockport County, gives the Black Cats an insurmountable 16-point lead at the top of the table and promotion to the top flight.

It wasn't looking too good for Sunderland early on in Sunday's match though as Stockport took a two goal lead through Katie Brusell prior to half-time and Suzanne Hunt just before the hour mark.

But with less than 20 minutes remaining Donna Lanaghan gave Sunderland hope, and with only 5 minutes left on the clock Stephanie Houghton equalised to see Sunderland crowned worthy champions.

Meanwhile at the other end of the table Coventry City’s defeat leaves them bottom of the Northern Division, whilst Tranmere Rovers’ 1-0 win against Middlesbrough means that Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City are still nervously looking over their shoulders.
