Champagne for Chapman
Monday, 21 March 2005.
England and Charlton star Katie Chapman has become the first player to receive the Nationwide Women’s Player of the Month accolade twice, scooping the award in September 2004 and now taking the latest award for February 2005.
A selection panel chose Katie following her outstanding contributions to her club side in both The FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League and The FA Women’s Cup during the past month.
A series of winning goals, firstly in the important league game against Birmingham and then in the 4-0 victory over Fulham, were essential in securing the club’s position at the top of the league and allowed the Addicks some breathing space.
In the Quarter Finals of The FA Women’s Cup - Charlton’s third match of the month, another Chapman goal took the club past Sunderland into the Semi Finals. Her essential contribution for England in the international against Italy at Milton Keynes Dons also made Katie an obvious choice for the award.
Katie said: “I enjoyed some great matches during February for my club and it is a great honour to be named the Nationwide Player of the Month for the second time. Combined with our victory against fellow Women's Euro 2005 contenders Italy, it was a fantastic month all round.
"With only a handful of games left until the end of the season, myself and the team are working hard to ensure we remain at the top of the league and after beating Bristol Rovers in The FA Women’s Cup Semi-Final at the weekend, we’ve got a tough Final against Everton to look forward to in May.”
Dean Kiely and Charlton Athletic women’s team manager Keith Boanas presented Katie with a specially commissioned magnum of champagne.
Dean said: “Katie is an important part of the team at Charlton and I am delighted to present her with her second award.”
Nationwide's Chris Hull commented: "We would like to congratulate Katie on her top-class performances for her club as well as for her country this season. There is stiff competition every month for this award and for Katie to take the award twice is testament to her dedication to the game.
“Katie has had a great season so far at Charlton and it promises to be an exciting end to the season as the top of the table is very close – we’d like to wish Katie the best of luck in the league, in the FA Women’s Cup Final and in Women's Euro 2005.”
