A last minute own goal gave Bristol City a fortuitous point as the Robins rallied to draw 2-2 with Millwall Lionesses and keep themselves on track for promotion to the top flight of the FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League.
City took a 44th minute lead through Kirsty Richardson, but Kelly Campbell equalised four minutes after the break then Claire Rafferty put the Lionesses ahead two minutes from time.
It looked all over for the Robins, who had dominated much of the match without being able to add to Richardson’s goal.
But as the game headed into stoppage time Michelle Munro tried a shot which took a big deflection off a defender to enter the net and rob Millwall of victory.
The result meant that second in the table City must now beat third-placed Wimbledon in their last match of the season next week to snatch the Southern Division title and promotion away from current leaders Southampton Saints, who have completed their fixtures.
At the other end of the table, meanwhile, the battle to avoid the drop along with already relegated Barnet will also go to the last game of the season.
Second from bottom Merthyr Tydfil’s 3-0 defeat by Watford means that, even if Merthyr beat Ipswich Town in their penultimate match, the relegation issue will not be resolved until Merthyr meet third-bottom Enfield Town in the division’s final match of the campaign on Sunday, 9th May.
The picture is far more clear-cut in the Northern Division, where the last of the big issues was settled through Sunderland’s 8-0 pounding of Chesterfield.
Mel Reay hit five goals and Jill Scott bagged a hat-trick as the Black Cats made themselves the division’s top scorers for the season.
The second from bottom Spireites, after just one season in the Premier League, will be relegated alongside bottom club Bangor City.
Sunderland will finish the season as runners-up to Liverpool, who have long since celebrated their climb back up to the National Division two seasons after being relegated.
Also in the Northern Division, Stockport County won 3-0 at Bangor to take third place while Wolves drew 1-1 with Manchester City to finish fifth.
The tussle for the National Division title is set to go beyond the traditional end of the season, which normally concludes with the FA Cup final.
This year’s final, between Arsenal and Charlton Athletic, will be played on Monday, 3rd May at the Loftus Road home of Queens Park Rangers.
The Gunners and the Addicks are also involved in the championship chase, whose final furlong will be battled out between second in the table Arsenal and third-placed Fulham on a date yet to be set during mid-May.
If, in the meantime, Fulham win their penultimate match against Birmingham City, then the winners of the Arsenal-Fulham clash will pip current leaders Charlton to the title.
But if, on the other hand, the big London derby is drawn then Charlton will add the League crown to the Premier League Cup they have already won and, who knows, perhaps the FA Cup as well.
