Belles ready for Shield
Tuesday, 05 August 2003.
Rovers Belles star striker Karen Walker is hoping her team's supporters turn out in force for Wednesday evening's FA Women's Community Shield, in partnership with Nationwide...
Belles face a tough test against treble winners Fulham, who will be defending the competition that they won last season by beating Arsenal on penalties.
Walker told TheFA.com: "This game means a great deal to all the girls. It is great to be taking part in this match and a good result would give us a boost ahead of the new season."
Sky Sports will begin their coverage of the season opener at 7.30pm with kick-off at 7.30pm. Commentary will be provided by Bryn Law with Leeds United's England winger Sue Smith providing the expert analysis.
It will be an interesting game for spectators as both teams will be managed by new coaches - Marieanne Spacey with Fulham and John Buckley for Rovers Belles.
"This is my first game in charge of Doncaster Rovers Belles and I hope that the fans will turn out in force and give the team a big cheer," said Buckley. “Fulham are a very good team and will give us a tough game but I know that the Belles will give it all they've got and I hopeful that we can start the new season on a high."
The match is being played at Mansfield Town's Field Mill ground and Doncaster Rovers Belles take their place in the match as league runners-up. Fulham, who did the league and cup double last season, will be hoping to kick-off their season as semi-professionals in style.
Tickets are on sale from Mansfield Town's ticket office priced £3 for adults and £1 for under 16s and OAPs. To guarantee your seat call the ticket hotline number on 0870 756 3160 although tickets will be available on the night.
