Over 3,000 schoolgirls across South Yorkshire have taken to the football pitch to battle it out in the South Yorkshire equivalent of the World Cup.
The South Yorkshire Girls Primary School tournament was launched with the backing of Yorkshire Bank’s Sheffield Financial Solution Centre (FSC), who donated £1,000 to help Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA support and develop girl’s football across the region.
The competition is held in each local authority area with regional winners representing their school and area in a grand Finals day at Sheffield United Academy.
James Hope-Gill, Chief Executive of the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA said: “This year’s event is one of the biggest yet and we are delighted with the support we’ve received from Yorkshire Bank. The money went towards providing souvenir certificates for all 3,000 girls who too part, as well as producing a souvenir Finals programme for the girls to keep.”
The final will take place at The Forsyth Sheffield United Academy today, where all the participating school teams will gather to cheer on the girls who made it through to the play offs.
The qualifying teams from the regional heats are:
Doncaster: Hatchell Wood, Doncaster Road, Askern Spa
Rotherham: Bramley Sunnyside, Maltby St Marys, Herringthorpe, Wath Central
Sheffield: Dronfield, Southey Green, Gleadless, Nether Green
Barnsley: Hoyland Common, Dodworth, Holy Rood, Barugh Green
