Women's football is definitely on the up in Cambridgeshire, and girls and women in the County are set for a further boost with the launch of a new 6-a-side league.
In Cambridge and the surrounding towns there are a growing number of competitive teams, accommodating players of a variety of skills, age and fitness.
This situation means within the catchments of Cambridge, girls and women have the opportunity to sample a different style of football, apart from the Saturday University Leagues and the Sunday Leagues that are currently in place.
The new 6-a-side league is the brainchild of Kirsty Frior, Girls and Women's Football Development Officer at the Cambridgeshire FA. Kirsty said:
"The league is designed to give those women who perhaps can not commit to an 11-a-side team, those who are looking for an alternative to grass football, or simply those looking to increase their fitness levels, get some fresh air and get away from their every day worries, a chance to play the national game.
"The league is open to all women over the age of 14, so whether you play in a regular team or not, we will warmly invite you into the league."
At this stage of the league's development only 8 teams can be accommodated, but if successful, Cambridgeshire FA's plan is to double this to 16 teams for a winter league.
The league will kick off on Wednesday 4th June for seven weeks, with games lasting 24 minutes each; 12 minutes each way.
Squad sizes will not be limited, but players must be registered, and a maximum of 9 players will be able to play in a game.
