England 2-0 Norway
UEFA Women's U19 Championship, Second Qualifying Round
Campo Sportivo - Vajont
30 April 2005

Mo Marley's England Women's U19s pulled off a shock in Vajont, Italy as they defeated the much-fancied Norwegians to secure a place at the 2005 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship in Hungary.

They beat the group leaders by the required 2-0 margin and as such they qualify from Group 2 by virtue of a superior goal difference.

England started the match lying third in the section, knowing that they would have to earn at least a two-goal win to edge out their opponents and book themselves a place at the European Championship Finals.

Marley's side would doubtless have been hoping for an early goal and they got exactly that at the Campo Sportivo as Fulham midfielder Danielle Bird, who had also scored in the 2-1 against Italy, broke the deadlock after just six minutes.

The way the England girls were going about the task in hand was truly brilliant and, having bossed the game from the start, Arsenal's Lianne Sandersen scored the vital second on the stroke of half-time.

Needing something from the match, Jarl Torske's Norway side threw themselves forward in a vain attempt to grab a goal. England's defence held firm though, and the Three Lions were looking dangerous on the counter attack.

With the final whistle came jubilation for the whole England camp and they will now compete alongside Germany, France, Russia, Finland, Switzerland, Scotland and the hosts in the UEFA Women's U19 Championship Finals in Hungary between 20 and 31 July 2005.
