Everton duo earn call
Wednesday, 02 August 2006.
On the eve of The FA Women's Community Shield at Crewe Alexandra FC tonight, Everton have had a boost with the news that two of their talented youngsters have been called-up into the Senior England training camp.
Fern Whelan and Michelle Evans have impressed with their displays at England Youth level, and with injury to Faye White ruling her out for most of the coming season, Head Coach Hope Powell has elected to blood the talented duo.
For those fans who haven't yet seen Fern and Michelle in action, tickets are still available for tonight's traditional curtain-raiser at Gresty Road, with kick-off against the reigning double holders Arsenal at 8.05pm.
Talking to TheFA.com, Everton Coach Mo Marley said: "Despite being only 17, put in some superb displays at centre half last season. She has progressed through the England ranks to U21 level, and is surely a future full international. Fern is strong in the air as well as in the tackle and commands the defence.
"Michelle is another of the players whose Everton performances have lead to her being recognised by England. Indeed she played in the recent Nordic Cup competition last month. Michelle operates predominantly on the left and possesses a powerful shot and can deliver an accurate cross.
"We are very proud that the two girls have been recognised and this is further motivation for all the players that if they keep working on their game, they could earn a senior call-up too."
