In a group that also contains fellow Euro 2005 finalists France, Holland and Hungary, Austria are currently 47th in the FIFA World Rankings, and will the first of three consecutive away qualifiers for the Three Lions.

The squad announced today features four changes to the squad that represented England at Euro 2005.

Sue Smith, Kelly McDougall, Jo Potter and Siobhan Chamberlain come into the squad, with Jo Fletcher, Leanne Hall, Anita Asante and Eniola Aluko the absentees.

Charlton Athletic’s Jo Potter told TheFA.com today that she was “shocked, but over the moon” to receive her call-up.

“I was obviously gutted not to make the squad in the summer, but rather than sulking, I just set out to play well and hopefully get my chance again”, she said.

“I had a good tournament with the U21s, including scoring the winning penalty against Germany and have had a good start at my new club too.”

Charlton beat Doncaster Rovers Belles 1-0 at the weekend with Potter, a summer signing from Birmingham City, the architect down the left flank.

“It’s exciting being at Charlton and I’m happy to have gelled so quickly with the team on Sunday. One good performance doesn’t mean I’ve made it at a team with lots of great players, but it was nice to see Gemma Ritchie put away my cross at the weekend!”

Brent Hills, England’s Assistant National Coach was in charge of the U21s at the Nordic Cup at the end of July and told TheFA.com: “There is a lot of competition for places in the squad now, and a lot of the younger players are also making a claim through their performances for the U19s and U21s this summer.

“Siobhan, Kelly and Jo all performed very well in Sweden at the Nordic Cup and have the capabilities to come into the squad and take their opportunity if it is presented to them.

“Last year, Alex Scott, Lindsay Johnson, Emily Westwood and Anita Asante all staked their claim for a place in the Senior Squad following the Nordic Cup, and the message is clear to all the players, that if they perform and are dedicated, they will get their chance.”

After her marginal omission from the Euro 2005 squad, Leeds United’s Sue Smith also returns to the squad, after a summer spent watching and analysing the action for the BBC.

“I’m made up to be back in the squad”, Sue told TheFA.com. “I met up with the squad for the training camp at Lilleshall last week and really tried my hardest to show the coaching staff what I can do.

“Strangely I didn’t feel any pressure, but I desperately wanted to get back in the squad, as missing out on selection for the Euro’s was a huge disappointment.”

England meet up on Sunday evening before flying out to Austria on Tuesday morning.
