Head Coach Hope Powell has announced her squad to face Italy at MK Dons FC on Thursday 17 February, a squad that will be without Kelly Smith after the recently returned Arsenal Ladies player suffered a stress fracture.

Italy qualified for Women's Euro 2005 after they finished second in their group behind Sweden, defeating the Czech Republic 5-1 on aggregate in a two-legged play-off.

The two sides have met on twenty previous occasions with the Azzurre holding the upper hand with twelve victories to England’s three. The last time they met, Italy emerged victors over a young England side with four new caps by a narrow 1-0 margin in Viareggio in February 2003.

Fara Williams came close to scoring twice but Placchi made the most of Leanne Champ's mistimed tackle to score from eight yards on 37 minutes and she could have added a second in the last minute of the first half but was adjudged to be offside.

The second half saw Kelly McDougall earn her first cap, stepping up from the U19 squad, and she was joined by Laura Bassett and Carmaine Walker who also made their debuts.

The squad for the international on 17 February 2005 is:
