The Brighton Hove and District League moved comfortably into the second round of the FA National League System Cup with an impressive 5-1 victory over the Mid Sussex League.

Played at Lewes Football Club, the Brighton League starting eleven boasted eight players from current Premier Division champions Hanover and it was apparent from the start that they looked far more comfortable than their opponents.

They took the lead early on when Nick Gunn's cross was driven in at close range from Robbie Jackson.

The Mid Sussex League hit the side netting on 15 minutes before Phil Hussey bundled in a corner from close range and forward Ryan Mason added a third just before the interval.

Mason added a fourth, running at the heart of the Mid Sussex defence, after half-time before Aaron Zimmatore replied.

Mason missed a good chance to extend the Brighton League's advantage and then Spencer Mears added a fifth with a 20-yard free kick.

Brighton League manager George Carney said: "Having so many players from one side helped with our understanding and our team spirit was excellent.

"Tactically I think we got it right, playing with an extra man in midfield allowed us to control the middle of the park and exploit the wide areas. Everyone played their part but I must give special mentions to our two wide players Robbie Jackson and Darren Mansell. Their work rate was first class.

"The whole day has been a great experience and we can't wait for the next round."
