Following their success in the inaugural FA National League System Cup competition, and subsequent appearance in both the Preliminary and Intermediate Rounds of the UEFA Regions Cup as England’s representatives, the Mid Cheshire League are looking forward to the defence of their crown this season.

It has been a year of highs and lows for the Mid Cheshire League, their representatives Barnton recaptured the League title despite their European adventures, but the summer months saw a mass exodus of players to a higher standard of football due to their increased exposure and success during last season.

As a result, Barnton's manager, Nick Armitage, resigned and was immediately linked to a number of clubs in the area. The successes have seen the likes of Chris Gahgan leave for Northwich Victoria, where he played towards the end of last season, and more regularly this term.

Goalkeeper Richard Mottram left to join Congleton Town, whilst a number of other players retired altogether stating a lack of motivation to continue playing at this level, having tasted the highs of representing their country.

All in all, this has been a bit of a setback for the holders as they start to prepare for the new campaign, and the League Management Committee has had to think long and hard as to how to remedy the situation.

Armitage, as Inter League Team Manager, has re-affirmed his desire to fulfill this role and therefore has been putting together a squad he thinks capable of representing the League, but he has admitted to a bit of disappointment and the feeling of disarray as he attempts to rally the troops.

"There are plenty of players who would jump at the chance of pulling on an England shirt, it is the ultimate prize for any English footballer," said Armitage.

"We are potentially only 4 games away from doing that again. But it is a whole different kettle of fish this time around, and not an ideal situation to be in.

"I will prepare the best team possible and all we can do is take it one game at a time. I am definitely up for the challenge!"
