The Mid-Cheshire League will be dusting down their passports today after a 2-0 victory over the Cambridge County League on Saturday, in the inaugural final of The FA National League System Cup.

In front of a crowd of 690, the Mid-Cheshire side scored in the second minute and the final moments of the game at Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium, ensuring they will travel to Slovenia to play in the Preliminary Round of the UEFA Regions Cup, alongside the hosts, Malta and Northern Ireland.

Chris Gahgan opened the scoring, as the Mid-Cheshire League [represented solely by Barnton FC] powerfully headed home from an Aidan Brodigan cross.

As Cambridge tried to get back on level terms they were prone to leaving gaps at the back, and Gahgan nearly exploited the space on 34 minutes when, with only Alan Sutton to beat, he fired straight at the 'keeper.

Despite chances being at a premium and Mid-Cheshire delivering such an early blow, the host side continued to threaten, with Mark Abbs coming within a whisker of restoring parity from a free kick on 55 minutes.

In the final quarter, Mid-Cheshire started to slowly turn the screw and finally doubled their lead in the dying moments as substitute Kevin Towey secured the win, and ensured the new trophy will travel up the M6.

TheFA.com will now follow the Mid-Cheshire League as they travel out to Slovenia, and will keep you up-to-date of their progress, as they seek to move into the second group stage of the UEFA Regions Cup, where Bosnia-Herzogovina, San Marino and the Republic of Ireland will await.
