There was delight for Wycombe Wanderers, Brighton and Hove Albion and Southend United, but penalty shoot-out agony for Curzon Ashton in Wednesday night's FA Youth Cup matches.

Southend recorded their biggest win of the season as they thumped Barnet 7-3 at Roots Hall and their reward is now a home tie against Derby County.

After a great game in Essex, the Shrimpers' youth team coach Ricky Duncan was delighted with his side's display against Barnet.

"I'm very pleased with our performance; we played some excellent attacking football," he said.

Southend were 6-2 ahead at half-time, with Rhys Henry scoring twice and there was no way back for Barnet.

Duncan added: "It will be fantastic to play against Derby. The players knew that was the prize at stake and it drove them on."

It was Brighton who won possibly the biggest prize though, as they will now go to Manchester United having won 3-0 at Bristol Rovers.

Brighton's Director Of Football Martin Hinshelwood was quick to praise the players for their excellent win.

"Full credit to the players; they did what we wanted them to do and expressed themselves," he said.

Youth team coach Vic Bragg's side took the lead through striker Kane Louis after 20 minutes and never looked back, as Steve Brinkhurst added a vital second goal before the break.

The result was confirmed when Kane Wills added the third goal just after the hour mark when he followed up Liam Upton's rebound.

Talking about the next round, Hinshelwood added: "Every youth team in the country would love to play against Manchester United. Credit also to all the staff who work behind the scenes to make this possible."

Curzon Ashton were cruelly knocked out after losing 6-5 to Chester City on penalties after a one-all draw.

Chester will host York City in the Third Round. In other ties, Retford United lost 2-0 to Shrewsbury Town, Huddersfield won 2-1 away at Tranmere and Luton saw off Corby Town 4-1.

Wycombe's reward for their 5-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge is a home tie against holders Liverpool.
