The Brentford and Lewes first teams are in FA Cup action tomorrow, at Luton and Mansfield respectively, but it was the Bees youngsters who triumphed in last night's FA Youth Cup tie at a chilly Griffin Park.

Brentford, clear favourites to progress to a Second Round tie at home to Swindon, failed to really test a slightly fragile-looking Lewes defence in the opening minutes. But the Sussex side didn't set foot in Brentford's half until the fourth minute and were clearly thinking more in terms of defence than attack.

A poor crossfield pass by a Lewes defender gifted Bees their first goal on 19 minutes. It went straight to left-winger Chris Flood, who had plenty of space in front of him in which to advance goalwards. Before he could be challenged he had shot low into the corner, giving Lewes 'keeper Jack Adams little chance.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 and the visitors in their change strip of sky blue were crumbling. Lewis Ochoa looked up with the ball at his feet about 30 yards from goal and a brilliant right-footer flew into the net. Suddenly a big score seemed to be on the cards.

Lewes held it together despite some clattering tackles from a fitter, stronger team. Bees skipper Harry Mavromatis overstepped the mark to see yellow and there might have been one or two others. Fred Foreman's free-kick missed the near post by inches as the underdogs came back into contention and they went on to enjoy a much more positive second half.

Stephen Hendry on Brentford's right flank proved to be a major handful for the Lewes defence and he set up several chances for his team-mates before one low cross at speed was swept in at the far post by Ochoa for 3-0 on 71 minutes.

But it wasn't Lewes' cue to capitulate: Foreman netted from close range four minutes later and if Jack Walder's long-range effort hadn't been tipped over by Seb Brown, it would have made for an interesting last couple of minutes.

Lewes had put on a decent display overall and it must have been a thrill for the boys to play at a famous old ground like Griffin Park.
