West Ham United have lifted The FA Youth Cup three times, most recently in 1999 with Joe Cole and Michael Carrick in the side, but Tony Carr's youngsters crashed out in this season's Third Round at Upton Park last night.

Charlton Athletic substitute Dane Springer struck a left-footer into the top corner nine minutes into extra time and it won the tie for the team managed by ex-Chelsea star Damian Matthew.

Hammers dominated the early play and might have been three goals to the good after ten minutes.

Junior Stanislas, big and quick, started some of their best moves down the right wing and showed he could take a mean free-kick on the half-hour, his curling right-footer from the edge of the "D" bringing a superb finger-tip save from Mads Nielsen. The first half was very much a case of West Ham attacking and Charlton defending.

But there were chances at both ends in the second period, Donovan Simmonds lashing a volley against the underside of the bar for the visitors before their centre-half Mark Staunton made a fantastic diving block to deny Freddie Sears near the end

Stanislas was switched to the left flank and continued to cause mayhem with some high-speed sorties into the box.

The two sides had met in a league game in October, Hammers winning 4-2 away, but now there were no goals to show for 90 minutes of endeavour. It had been a "good" 0-0 with plenty of chances created by both teams.

A decent crowd saw a second-half substitute grab the goal that took the Young Addicks through to the Fourth Round.
