FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON Season 2006-07 Second Round QualifyingTies to be played in week commencing Monday 9 October 2006
Winger Liam Shepherd proved the perfect wide-boy to power York City into the Third Qualifying round of The FA Youth Cup.
The teenager completed an extra-time hat-trick to shatter plucky Selby Town 3-2 and set up a Third Round trip to the Minster mites' nemesis, Dunston Federation Brewery.
The North-east side have ousted City in the past two seasons at the same stage, so the KitKat Crescent kids will be hoping it's third time lucky when they resume Cup hostilities. Three was certainly the perfect number for Shepherd.
Eric Winstanley, who is currently in charge of the City youth team, said: "They were three great goals from Liam. All were excellent finishes.
"It was a hard-fought tie, though perhaps we should have made sure of it in normal time where we hit the woodwork twice. But I don't want to take anything away from Selby Town, they made us work hard."
Selby surged ahead in the 51st minute when Matt Walker applied a perfect finish to a Luke Winstanley cross. Shepherd levelled with a left-foot drive shortly after to take the tie into the added period.
The left-winger then seized centre staged with two more expert finishes in the space of three minutes before Selby wrapped up the scoring with a header from their best performer, Winstanley, after good work by Edward Wileman.
Lewes FC and Maidstone United fought out a close encounter on Friday evening as the game finished 0-0 after extra time before Lewes won 5-4 on penalties . Goalkeeper Jack Adams proved the hero in the shoot out by saving the opening penalty before substitute Jonathon Melia hit the all important fifth penalty.
A crowd of over 200 attended thanks mainly to members of local Charter Standard Development Club Lewes Bridge View who sponsored the game and Lewes's best chances in the game came in the opening half came from Matt Ford (photo attached of Matt) and also a header from Chris Bennett Grant (photo attached).
Sub Med Korma also failed to convert a couple of chances late on but the visitors also missed two excellent chances in the second period of extra time. Overall there was little to choose between two useful teams but in the it was the Sussex boys that went through.
Lewes will play Haywards Heath at home in the next round for the right to enter the First Round Proper, where local team Brighton & Hove Albion enter the draw and for ten of the boys a chance to play against their previuos club before being released.
The Lewes team for the game was: J Adams, R Markham, J Fitzpatrick, C Bennett- Grant, A Mikolay, J Gray, J Walder, S Greatwich, M Ford, A Last, A Wilkinson Subs:M Korma, J Melia, J Dryer,W Broomfield, K Ardaen-Webb.
Morecambe are safely through to the Third Qualifying Round of The FA Youth Cup following their 3-2 win at Vauxhall Motors.
Morecambe went a goal down early in the first half, but fought back strongly and went into the break 2-1 up after a double from in-form Jamie McKenna.
Manager Dickie Danson's Morecambe side then suffered a double blow when they lost their lead and were reduced to ten men as goalkeeper Ross Derbyshire was sent off and conceded a penalty for a professional foul early in the second half.
With that penalty converted, Morecambe proceeded to book their trip to either Altrincham or Worksop Town in the next round thanks to a well taken effort from Paul Jarvis.
The winger was put clean through on goal with a searching pass to put him one-on-one with the goalkeeper and he slotted the ball home. With thanks to Paul Brinkhurst and Karen Hopcutt for their fantastic contributions.
