Manchester United's youngsters squeezed through to The FA Youth Cup's last eight with a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic at a muddy Old Trafford last night.
United strikers Febian Brandy and Fraizer Campbell got the goals to secure a Sixth Round away tie against Nottingham Forest or Manchester City after James Walker had given the Londoners a first-half lead.
Heavy rain and a chilly wind made conditions difficult but it was Charlton who were more incisive in attack in the opening minutes.
United's David Gray put in a last-ditch challenge to deny Chima Orelaja before the visitors went ahead midway through the first period. Walker climbed above Craig Cathcart to send a firm header past Robert Zieler, United's German 'keeper.
Three minutes after the break United's Brandy (pictured) hit back to level, the current England U17 cap pouncing on a defensive error and running on to slip the ball between the legs of the advancing Joe Wooley.
The side managed by Paul McGuinness grew in confidence as the half wore on and United's winner arrived with 12 minutes left on the clock.
Campbell, a substitute for England's U19s this season, fired in a powerful left-footer from the edge of the box that looped into the net via Harry Arter's outstretched leg.
A fairly sparse Old Trafford crowd was happy to cheer a rather fortunate goal and will now look forward to a possible derby tie with City, who play at Forest tonight.
Brighton & Hove Albion, conquerors of Chelsea, play at Blackburn Rovers in tonight's other Fifth Round ties.
One to watch...
Fraizer Campbell
Was rather fortunate with his goal, but the United youngster is one to look out for at Old Trafford and has already played for the England youth teams.
