The FA Carlsberg Vase reaches its Second Round Qualifying stage this weekend. This season’s competition has barely started, but no fewer than ten Vase finalists will be in action and we can take a look at those ahead of the games.
Bedlington Terriers from the Northern League’s Division One, lost the 1999 Final 1-0 to Tiverton Town. A 13,878 crowd at Wembley saw teenager Scott Rogers score the goal that allowed the Devon side to retain the Vase. Terriers make the short trip to Morpeth Town, who play in the same division.
Guisborough Town from the Northern League’s Division Two, 2-0 losers in the 1980 Final to Stamford, entertain Hebburn Town from the same division. Saturday’s tie will be decided on the day, with no replay.
Whickham, another Division Two club, were Vase winners against Willenhall Town in 1981 and now face Jarrow Roofing Boldon CA at their own Glebe Sports Ground.
Tow Law Town are the last finalists from the north east to be on the Wembley trail tomorrow. The Northern League Division One outfit lost the 1998 Vase Final 1-0 to Tiverton and now have an away tie at Bottesford Town in Lincolnshire.
Rainworth MW, losers in the 1982 Final to Forest Green Rovers, go to Radcliffe Olympic and Diss Town, dramatic extra-time winners against Taunton Town in 1994, host Fakenham Town.
Hoddesdon Town, who have made a good start to their Spartan South Midlands League Division One campaign, won the first-ever Vase Final in 1975 after edging Epsom & Ewell 2-1 at Wembley.
They go to Desborough Town tomorrow, just eight wins from an appearance at the new stadium. Essex Senior League Stansted, the 1984 winners against Stamford, are at home to Daventry United.
Epsom themselves are currently in the lower reaches of the Combined Counties League’s Premier Division. Tunbridge Wells, who famously featured in an FA Cup penalty shootout that went to 40 kicks in 2005, visit the E’s at Merland Rise.
Tommy Sampson managed Deal Town to Vase success in the last final at the old Wembley in 2000 and they now receive his new charges Redhill at Deal Electrical Stadium.
