There were goals galore in The FA Vase today, with cherished places in the Quarter Finals at stake.

Merstham needed five goals to see off the challenge of Consett, while East Anglian rivals St Ives and Needham Market shared a six-goal thriller at The Saltings.

In a nightmare day for defences, Merstham fought back from 4-2 down to claim an emphatic win at Moatside, where goals either side of half time from Steven Brown and Steven Johnson had given Consett a precious two-goal lead.

The Surrey side hauled themselves back into contention through Mark Simmons’ fine goal, and they found reward for a tireless second half display through a late penalty to send the game to extra-time.

Consett then re-established their two-goal advantage but the hosts were not to be undone. Craig Vernon struck the telling goal deep into extra-time to settle what had been a scintillating encounter.

St Ives Town took the lead three times against Needham Market but still had to settle for a replay when Graham Thackery and Dan Moyes had their goals cancelled out by strikes from Reece Baver and Ben Wake.

The hosts thought they had won the tie when Barry Albone found the net in extra-time but Polish striker Nathan Szyszlyk ensured the spoils were shared in Cambridgeshire.

Elsewhere in The Vase, Concord Rangers edged past Camberley Town 2-0 in a closely-fought encounter at Thames Road, while Stanway Rovers were sent crashing out following a 3-1 home defeat to Coventry Sphinx, who continue their remarkable run in this competition.

Kirkham and Wesham made it into the last eight with a 2-0 win at Crowborough Athletic.
