The FA Carlsberg Vase
Fourth Round Proper
Saturday 20 January 2007
£1,500 to each winning club

Leamington are through to the last sixteen of The FA Vase after striker Ben Mackey inspired them to a 4-1 home victory over Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

In front of a crowd of over a thousand, Mackey opened the scoring for Leamington after 22 minutes, but on the stroke of half-time, the visitors were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty.

Brakes keeper Jason Pearcey pulled off a fine save but Graham Mankin was on hand to stroke home the rebound for the Quins. However, the visitors weren't level for long as Mackey added a fine second goal from Tom Bates’ cross.

With time running out, Leamington sealed the win with two goals in seven minutes. Martin Thompson slamming home a third on 78 minutes and Dave Pearson, who had replaced Mackey, netting the fourth soon afterwards to cap a fine day.

Leamington spokesman Roger Vincent said afterwards: "Ben's a real crowd pleaser and we're delighted with the result. The game was largely spoilt by the high wind, but the lads did well."

Meanwhile Quorn are also through to Monday's draw after they beat Stratford Town 2-1 at home. Vijinda Sidhu gave the home side the lead after just two minutes, the speedy forward latching on to a through ball to expertly lob the keeper.

Paul White almost doubled the hosts’ advantage minutes later, but he watched in agony as his effort rebounded off the crossbar. Quorn's second goal didn't arrive until 10 minutes before half-time. Gavin O'Toole cut inside on to his left foot and fired a rocket into the top corner from 25 yards.

Just minutes later, Anthony Robinson pulled one back for the visitors, but the home side held on well for the win.

Quorn club secretary Reg Molloy said: “We've been playing well recently, but not scoring. After we went two goals up, I think some doubts crept in - but we deserved our win."

Meanwhile, nobody will be relishing a trip to Devon in the next round after Bideford thumped Barwell 7-0 at home, while Retford United were also in goal-scoring mood as they travelled to Flixton and beat them 5-2.

Finally, there were 2-1 wins for Street at Burnham Ramblers and AFC Totton at Potton United.
