Chatham Town manager Phil Miles believes getting the basics right will improve his side's chances of producing a major Trophy upset against in-form Kingstonian.

Kingstonian go into the game having won six of their seven league games so far this season. On the other hand, Town cannot boast such a record, having won only once in the same Isthmian Division One South League.

The two sides also have a league fixture to fulfil later this month, but Kingstonian will head into this Trophy encounter as clear favourites despite playing away from home.

Miles insists that Chatham still have a chance though, and said: "We're always confident of beating teams.

"We're going to start again, go back to basics and defend properly. We've got to take our chances, we create enough of them and we just need to start putting them away!"

Defending is certainly something that requires urgent attention from Miles, following a heavy 1-4 home defeat by Dulwich Hamlet a few weeks ago and then conceding six at Croydon Athletic at the end of September.

"Our last few results have been disappointing and so were not ideal preparation for an important cup game," Miles conceded.

The Town boss now recognises that the importance of the game is heightened due to the disappointment of losing in The FA Cup to Kent rivals Margate last month and now hopes a big home crowd at Maidstone Road will help inspire them to victory.

"We struggle for supporters whether the team are winning or not, but hopefully we'll get a few more than usual given it's the cup."
