DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE v Southport
FA Trophy, in partnership with Carlsberg
Fourth Round
Saturday, February 1, 3pm

Winning club receives £1,500

Their magical run in The FA Cup may be over, but Dagenham & Redbridge now have their sights firmly set on winning The FA Trophy, in partnership with Carlsberg.

Their Fourth Round tie against Conference rivals Southport on Saturday will give the Daggers the chance to shake off their disappointment of being knocked out by a last-minute goal by Norwich City at the weekend.

For Paul Terry, hopes of lining up against his brother John for the first time in their football careers in the world's oldest and most exciting football cup competition have been shattered.

Now Paul's dream is for him to reach the final of The FA Trophy, non-league football's prestigious equivalent to The FA Cup, and for John to get to the final of The FA Cup with Chelsea.

Paul said: 'Our dream of playing against each other in The FA Cup has been put on hold for another year, but our goal now is for me to reach The FA Trophy final and for him to get to The FA Cup final.'

From a young age, both Paul and John showed the talent to go far in the game.

Twenty-three-year-old Paul - a year older than John - was the first to get his big break when Charlton took him on - but he suffered the huge disappointment of being released just as John was starting out as a YTS trainee with Chelsea.

Paul recalled: 'It was very difficult. I bottled it up and tried to put on a brave face but it wasn't until I went to Dagenham that I started to enjoy playing football again.'

Watching his brother lose out on a professional contract was tough for John but it made him even more determined to succeed. Paul was able to give him a valuable piece of brotherly advice.

He said: 'I took things for granted in my first year at Charlton. You always think you've got another year to impress so when John got to Chelsea I told him to keep his head down and he was rewarded with a contract.'

Paul has not given up on the hope of one day joining his brother in the top-flight. For now, he juggles being a part-time footballer with training to be a driving instructor - and being a dad to nine-month-old Georgia.

Paul said: 'I would love to be in John's position, but I am not jealous of him. I was devastated when there was no offer for me from Charlton but you have to get over it, soldier on and hope you get a chance at another club. I am 23 now and there's still time.'

John believes his brother has got what it takes to become a professional. He said: 'I love to go and watch Paul play.

I really do think he is good enough to play League football. 'He scores a lot of goals and his passing is good. I think he is playing as well as he ever has and I'm sure someone will take a chance on him.' A perfect shop window for Paul would be in the final of The FA Trophy at Villa Park on May 18.

Paul said: 'The Trophy is very important to us. We were never going to win The FA Cup but we want to make a serious challenge for the Trophy as well as getting promotion.' Dagenham have reached the final once before in 1997 when they finished runners-up to Woking.

After holding Plymouth Argyle to a draw in the Third Round of The FA Cup, Dagenham made sure they weren't on the receiving end of a giant-killing by beating Ryman Division One North side Marlow in the Third Round of The FA Trophy.

Their Fourth Round tie is a chance to avenge their defeat by Southport in the Conference earlier this season.

Paul said: 'We lost 3-0 at home to Southport and had two sendings-off in that game.

'We are looking forward to the game and want to get a good run in the Trophy so that we can go on and win it this season.

'A win on Saturday would help us to get over our FA Cup disappointment. We were gutted to lose in the 90th minute.

'Everything seemed to be going well. We got amongst them and didn't let them settle, but we were dealt a cruel blow in the last few seconds. I spoke to John straight after the game and told him to make sure he went through.

'We've now got to pick ourselves up and get focused on the Trophy and the league.'

Dagenham were knocked out at the Fourth Round of The FA Trophy last season, losing 2-0 to Telford United. Farnborough Town, also knocked out of The FA Cup at the weekend, are away to Telford on Saturday.
