Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA's Director of Football Development, scored a winning goal in an FA Cup Final for West Ham United but also has fond memories of his days playing Sunday League football in Essex.
As Coundon Conservative and Lebeq Tavern Courage prepare to go head to head for the country's most prestigious Sunday football trophy at Anfield this weekend, Sir Trevor admits that he himself had some great times playing on Sunday mornings.
Although his header against Arsenal at Wembley in 1980 is a classic moment in Cup Final history – particularly for Hammers fans – a goal for his Brentwood-based team in the mid-nineties gave him as much satisfaction.
“After I packed up playing professionally I started playing Sunday football for a side in Brentwood,” he told TheFA.com. “I played for about ten years and the only concession they gave me was that I wouldn’t have to wash the kit when it came round to the Bs!
“I remember scoring a couple of goals that I’d term as ‘fantastic’ and gave me as much satisfaction as scoring the header in The FA Cup Final.
"I remember hitting a free-kick, which bounced back off the wall, and I struck it on the half volley. It was as sweet as it could have been, and it pinged into the top corner," he said.
“I could have been there all night and never hit it as sweetly, but it was so satisfying to do it in a game.
“Yes it was on a Sunday morning, but it still means a lot.”
The match this Sunday is at Anfield, the fifth time a Sunday Cup Final has been played at the home of the Merseyside giants.
Kick off is at 2pm and tickets, in the Kop, are priced at £5 adults, concessions £1, and can be bought on day. Turnstiles open at 1pm.
