Britannia F.C. win the F.A. Sunday Cup
Now in its 38th year, The F.A. Umbro Sunday Cup is the calendar event for Sunday teams across England. For the second year running, Villa Park hosted the Final, giving the players a taste of playing at a Premiership Stadium.
Liverpool’s Britannia FC won yesterdays final, with the 2-0 score line a fair reflection of their dominance over the 1999 winners, Little Paxton FC. Despite losing Jimmy Slomka after just twenty minutes, Britannia dominated for long periods of the game, substitute John Morgan easily could have scored a hat trick on another day. However Little Paxton's defence, marshalled by captain Mark Humphrey, held firm as players from both sides battled through a first half rainstorm.
The second half started brightly enough for Paxton, but a wonder strike by Peter Hayes from 35 yards gave Britannia the lead, just ten minutes into the second half. Nathan Buckland, at the heart of the Little Paxton defence, was undoubtedly on form, his superb last-ditch tackles denied the ever-unlucky Morgan. The victory was completed in the last ten minutes by Britannia striker Peter Daley, who volleyed the second goal from just inside the Little Paxton box.
The final whistle sparked celebrations from the Britannia fans as their team was presented the Cup by The F.A. Chairman and UEFA Vice-President Geoff Thompson and Duncan Thomson from Umbro.
Geoff Thompson said "It was a great day for the players and the fans of the two finalists. Sunday football was the real winner here today and I would like to thank Umbro and Aston Villa for their continued support of the Umbro Sunday Cup"
