Doncaster College for the Deaf enjoyed a dramatic victory in The FA National Futsal Finals in Sheffield at the weekend.
Under the appreciative gaze of Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Director of Football Development, the Doncaster side became the first ever disability team to win a major mainstream football competition. It also raises the intriguing prospect of this talented team entering the UEFA Futsal Cup.
In an entertaining Final at the English Institute of Sport on Sunday the Deaf College looked to be coasting to the title with a 3-0 advantage over Baltic United. However the London outfit roused themselves to score two late goals to set up a nail-biting final few minutes.
But it was too much to ask for from Baltic, who looked tired from their semi-final victory over 2004 winners Team USSR. They were once again the team to beat but the one match suspension of the Golden Boot Winner Alexendr Topalo proved to be decisive as the previously free-scoring Russians were stifled by a resolute and physically imposing Baltic defense.
The FA Plate Competition was won by Washwood Heath - making their first appearance in this tournament. The Birmingham Champions defeated Vaughans 7-4 in an exciting Final after seeing a dramatic improvement dramatically as the tournament went on.
Vaughans also played some excellent Futsal in the course of the competition, but the limitation of their seven man squad finally told in this exhausting tournament.
Dermot Collins, The FA's National Manager for Small Sided Football, hailed the weekend's play: "I am really delighted by the way the competition has gone," he said.
"This year we had seven strong Futsal teams contesting the quarter finals. The FIFA delegate has been impressed by both the standard of play and also with the performance of our English Referees."
He added: "We had hundreds of Children playing in the schools and club competition and the victory of Doncaster College is a great story."
